Today's To Do List

  • Think of yourself as an actor about to go on stage. You have a part to play and it's called giving a speech, so you act, like an actor and walk to the lectern calmly and give your speech

  • As you are about to be introduced, you can visualize yourself in a calm and lovely setting, perhaps by the ocean, nature nurturing your mind and body. Then, you are in a relaxed frame of mind to rise and speak.

  • Practice your speech using bullet points, rather than memorizing the entire speech, so that you can talk in an eloquent manner flowing from one point to the next in a casual, rather than rehearsed manner.

Public Speaking a Daunting Task?

Public speaking can be a daunting task for many people. They are instinctually afraid of standing up in front of their peers to speak. Here are ten tips to help you overcome those fears.

First, know what your objectives and key points are. Remember, you have a valuable opportunity to speak to this group of people, and you have a point to get across.

  • Time is valuable, and the people in your audience do not want their time to be wasted so do not do so.
  • Get to the point as quickly as you can.

Next, know your audience. If you can, talk to a few people from the audience before you begin speaking. This will help you to know what the needs are for this particular group. You will get a feel for the values and level of understanding of the people to whom you are talking.

Sketch out in your mind what you are going to talk about.

  • How are you going to get your audience involved in the discussion?
  • How are you going to move from point to point?
  • Is there one particular thing you want your audience to take from your talk? These considerations will help you stay on track once you begin.

When preparing your speech, make sure you use good sources. Create a database on your computer that allows you to input the author, date, source, topic, and a summary of your research.

This will allow you easy access to the information when you begin preparing your speech. Make sure you let your audience know some of your sources, but in a non-threatening way. This gives your information credibility.

Write down what you want to say, and make each point less than one hundred words. By writing it down you will ensure that you do not throw in needless information. Remember that the first few words of your point are going to be the most important in your speech.

Quotes Worth Remembering

True humor is fun - it does not put down, kid, or mock. It makes people feel wonderful, not separate, different, and cut off. True humor has beneath it the understanding that we are all in this together.-Hugh Prather
No one is perfect... that's why pencils have erasers. ~Author Unknown

A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault. ~John Henry Newman

Fear Of Public Speaking

by: Steve Hill

Social Phobia is an irrational anxiety brought forth by exposure to certain social situations, leading to avoidance behaviour.

Specific Phobia is a persistent and irrational fear in response to some specific stimulus, which commonly results in avoidance of/withdrawal from that stimulus. It could be triggered by an insect or animal (zoophobia), by a situation like being trapped in an enclosed space (claustrophobia) or it could be a fear of disease (pathophobia).

  • Though it feels real, the fear of public speaking or Glossophobia is what psychologists call "social construction". This means that it is not a natural phenomenon, but the result of something society has created. We expect it to cause fear and therefore, it causes fear.
  • Unfortunately it is this "fear of the fear" which causes the problem to perpetuate, creating a vicious cycle.
  • It is possible for a sufferer to change their attitude to public speaking and thus reduce their fear. If you can figure out exactly what it is about public speaking that scares you, then you can begin to see what you might be able to do about it. This analysis will help you to change your feelings.

For example, if you regard the thought that people might laugh at you to be an important factor in your fear, you should ask yourself when they have laughed at you before. If they only laughed when you wanted them to, then your fear is unreal. Such reflection can make a positive change in your attitude to public speaking.
